Mirror of Erised

In the story, the Mirror of Erised shows you your deepest desire, and men waste away in front of it, chasing a reflection instead of living a life. Mirror of Erised takes that idea and turns it on us.

What does the mirror show you? A bigger chain? A different postcode? Someone else's approval? The record asks a harder question underneath all that: what if the thing you're desperately chasing in the glass is something you already are?

We were kings and queens before they sold us a throne.

That line is the spine of the whole song. So much of what gets sold to us, the status, the labels, the flex, is a throne being sold back to people who were already royalty. You don't need to buy the crown. You need to remember the head it was always meant to sit on.

The trap in the reflection

The danger the mirror represents is real: you can spend your whole life staring at a version of success that keeps moving one step ahead, and never once look at what's actually in front of you. The record names that trap without pretending it's easy to escape. Wanting more isn't the sin. Losing yourself in the wanting is.

Looking up from the glass

So the song isn't anti-ambition, it's pro-clarity. Know what you're worth before the world prices you. Chase the life, not the reflection of it. And when you finally look up from the mirror, you might find the person staring back was enough the whole time.
